Instructions for Building a Potting Bench

Instructions for Building a Potting Bench

Gardeners need potting benches to make their work in the garden easier and more enjoyable. Potting benches keep tools and supplies all together in one spot. Potting benches also offer the gardener a place to work without having to bend over all the time when working with potted plants. Build your own potting bench and place it in the garage, basement or wherever you work with your plants to keep all the dirt and mess off your dining room table or kitchen counters. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Cut four pieces from the 1 x 4 pine that measure 34 inches and four pieces measuring 15 inches.

    2

Form two rectangles by laying two of the long sides on edge and placing the two short sides over the ends of the long sides. Screw the 1 5/8-inch wood screws through the short sides into the long sides to complete the two rectangles.

    3

Use the 2 x 2 pine to cut four legs for the potting bench that measure 32 inches long.

    4

Place one leg in each corner of one of the rectangles, making sure everything is flush. Secure the legs by putting in two screws on either side of each leg using the 2-inch wood screws.

    5

Get a friend to help you hold the other rectangle in place while you screw it in. Position the second rectangle 12 inches below the first rectangle for the bottom shelf of the potting bench.

    6

Flip the bench right side up.

    7

Take the 1 x 4 pine and cut eight pieces measuring 13 inches for the bottom shelf. Insert the boards in between the rectangle pieces and screw to secure using the 1 5/8 inch wood screws.

    8

Cut three boards to cover the top of the potting bench using the 5/4 x 6 decking to measure 38 inches. Place these on top of the potting bench and screw in place at each end using the 2-inch wood screws.

    9

Screw in the cup holders on one side of the potting bench and use these to hang your tools on.

    10

Sand and then paint or stain the potting bench as desired.
