How to Sew Covers for a Change Table

You can sew a changing table cover, whether the pad is flat or contoured, using just two pieces of fabric. A simple pillowcase-type cover with an opening will slip off easily for laundering, but will stay securely on the changing pad when closed with hook-and-loop tape. This project uses about 1 1/2 yards of fabric, requires only straight seams and is easy enough for beginners to complete. It's also inexpensive, especially when compared to the cost of purchasing a ready-made cover.

Instructions

    1

Measure the length, width and depth of the changing table pad.

    2

Multiply the depth measurement times two. Add the length measurement plus one inch for seams. This is the total length measurement.

    3

Multiply the depth measurement by two. Add the width measurement plus one inch for seams. This is the total width measurement.

    4

Divide the total length measurement by 36 inches to determine the fabric yardage needed.

    5

Purchase sufficient fabric for the project. Choose washable fabrics such as flannel or cotton.

    6

Pre-shrink the fabric by washing and drying it. Press out the wrinkles.

    7

Cut two pieces of fabric according to the total length and total width measurements.

    8

Sew the two fabric pieces right sides together, using a 1/2-inch seam alowance. Leave an opening on one short side so that you'll be able to remove the cover for washing.

    9

Turn the cover right-side out. Press under the seam allowances on the edges of the opening. Sew hook-and-loop tape to the pressed edges.
