Making folding wooden furniture is a simple task. Creating a wooden folding chair is a task that is great for kids to complete. With parental guidance, and supervision a child of any age can create their own wooden folding chair. Great for camping trips, excursions to the dirt track, and other events where seating is needed. These types of wooden folding furniture are lightweight and portable. Building a folding wooden chair doesn't require a lot of wood working knowledge or expensive tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Measure and cut the 1-inch-by-2-inch pieces of wood into eight pieces measuring 10 5/8-inches, 11 inches, two pieces 14-inches long, and four pieces 19 5/8-inches long.

    2

Drill a -inch hole 1-inch deep centered in the top of each of the 19 5/8 inch board. These will be known as the legs. Do the same on both ends of the 10 5/8-inch, and 11 -inch boards. The 10 5/8-inch board is the inside stretcher, and the 11-inch board is the outside stretcher.

    3

Drill a -inch hole centered on each leg 3 3/8 inches up from the bottom. This hole should be drilled completely through the board.

    4

Drill a hole 1-inches away from each edge of one 14-inch board. This will be the back top board.

    5

Drill a hole inches away from each edge of the other 14-inch board. This will be the front top board.

    6

Measure, mark, and cut the dowel rod at 1 7/8-inches. Repeat this until you have a total of eight 1 7/8-inch dowels.

    7

Measure and mark a line 8 inches down from the top of two leg boards. Create a "+" sign at that line on each board.

    8

Clamp two leg boards together on top of a scrap piece of wood. Ensure that the two boards are positioned evenly on top of each other.

    9

Drill a hole all the way through both boards with a -inch drill bit. Repeat Step 7 through 9 with the other two boards

    10

Place one T-nut inside the hole drilled in the previous step. Tap the nut into the hole with a hammer. Repeat with another leg. The two legs, the T-nuts, are installed on the outside legs.

    11

Place a machine screw into another leg. Place a washer over the screw. Place the leg that the T-nut was installed on over the screw in the other leg. Tighten the screw into the T-nut with a screw driver. There should now be two legs connected together with a screw.

    12

Apply a drop of wood glue into the holes at the top of each leg and the four holes in both the stretchers. Insert a dowel into each of these holes.

    13

Insert the dowel on either end of the outside stretcher into the hole of both outside legs. Do the same with the inside stretcher and inside leg. Apply a little wood glue to the dowel before inserting into the hole. The dowel will protrude out the other side of the hole. This can be cut and sanded down if preferred.

    14

Align the top front board with the dowels on both outer legs. Slide the dowel through the holes of the top front board. Do the same with the back top board and the inside legs.

    15

Paint or stain the chair. Allow ample time for the paint or stain to dry.

    16

Mark the two inside edges of the top boards. This is the two surfaces of the top boards that are facing each other. This will be the side of the board that the canvas will be attached to. Remove the top boards, and place them on a table with the marked side facing up.

    17

Place the canvas over the side of the board that was marked. Staple the canvas to the board spacing each staple no more than one -inch apart.

    18

Apply wood glue to the inside of the holes on the top boards and reattach them to the legs with the staples on the canvas facing down.

    19

Cut the bottom of the legs so that they sit flat on the ground. Use a scrap piece of wood pressed against the legs to mark the line where it needs to be cut. Cut along that line. Test the chair so that it does not rock when sitting on a flat surface.
