How to Make a Vanity Top

How to Make a Vanity Top

A home vanity can be a useful addition to your bedroom or bathroom. It can be a convenient place to keep all your toiletries and various other items that you use each day but do not have a permanent place for. Instead of piling these items on your dresser or bathroom counter, you can place them neatly on your vanity top for storage. You can turn any base into a stylish vanity by adding a vanity top. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Measure the base surface to help you determine how large the vanity top needs to be. You can add an inch or two to each side so that the vanity top has a bit of overhang.

    2

Cut out two sheets of plywood to fit the base of the vanity using a saw. Test to make sure they fit and then nail them together with a power nailer.

    3

Attach the plywood to the vanity base using screws.

    4

Use your measurements to cut out a sheet of backer board. This will make your vanity top water tight.

    5

Secure the backer board to the top of the plywood with thinset mortar and a notched trowel.

    6

Cover the backer board with an additional layer of thinset mortar and apply tiles to the vanity top. Apply them to the top and sides of the backer board. Use small tiles to enhance the appearance of the vanity and to avoid cutting tiles.

    7

Wait for the thinset mortar to set, and then apply grout using a grout float. Wipe away the excess with a wet cloth when you're done.
