Size
Most of the world measures nail size in terms of millimeters. In the United States, nail size is described by using the old English term "pennies." The symbol (d) is used to denote the penny size of a nail in the United States, based on the old Roman "denarius" one-cent coin.
Weight
A nail that has a higher penny number is larger --- and will weigh more than --- one with a smaller number. Nails are typically sold by the pound. The amount of nails per lb. will vary according to their size.
Types
Nails are made with several types of coatings. Finish nails have a corrosion-resistant coating, such as zinc. "Common" nails are uncoated.
