How to Choose the Right Size TV Stand

Modern televisions come in a variety of new sizes. Consequently, they require people to shop for television stands capable of comfortably showcasing a television. Televisions, however, have also gotten thinner. You will need to select a thin television stand large enough to accommodate DVD players, computers or movie archiving consoles, video game consoles, or speakers. If you find the task of shopping for television stands daunting, simply follow a few simple guidelines to pick a stand that will fit your needs.

    1

Match the height of the stand to the furniture in your home. For instance, the height positions the television at or just above eye level. Positioning a television at or just above eye level keeps you from straining your neck. Most couches sit people approximately 18-inches to 22 inches off the floor. Eye level ranges from 40 inches to 48 inches. Pick a stand that puts your viewing screen within eye-level range.

    2

Measure the width. The width must adequately hold the television, but you might also need room for speakers or other decorations. Make sure the width accommodates everything you need to hold within or on top of your television stand. Conversely, you do not want to select one that seems too wide. If you pick a stand too wide for your television, your television will appear smaller in comparison. A good formula for selecting a width involves selecting a stand 25 to 30 percent wider than your television.

    3

Compare the number of compartments within the television stand. Too-small television stands will not hold a DVD player or a game console or speakers. If you watch most of your movies or television on line, your stand must hold your computer case and also provide enough air for proper ventilation. A good strategy for selecting television stands includes making sure your stand has at least one 12-inch or 14-inch compartment.

    4

Compare the placement of the holes in the rear of the stand to your components. Most television stands come with pre-drilled holes in the back that allow you to thread wires to the sockets or components. If you select a too-large stand, the wires for your computer or DVD player might not stretch adequately to a distant hole.

    5

Examine the weight of the television stand. Large television stands might make moving them impossible. Make sure the material is strong but lightweight. Composite wood stands weigh between 75 pounds and 100 pounds. Metal and glass stands weight between 50 and 70 pounds, but make sure they successfully support your television.
