How to Update an Old Ottoman

How to Update an Old Ottoman

Has your ottoman seen its fair share of wear and tear? Don't throw it out, give it a new look! Whether you're just tired of the piece--or it needs some TLC--there are many easy ways to give your ottoman a new life. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

If you want to add some decorative touches, you can simply add nail heads around the bottom trim of your ottoman. The nail heads can be placed right next to each other or spaced however far apart to create the look you are trying to achieve. This can also help prevent any further wear and tear of the fabric around the edges. Decorative ribbon could be added as well, to add a little extra pop of color.

If the legs of your ottoman have seen better days or you simply want a change, you can always add different legs. To do this, remove the current legs from your ottoman. When you flip it over you will probably see that it has screws or nails, which can easily be removed with a screwdriver or hammer. Once you have found the legs you want (there are all types out there--and don't be afraid to switch it up with metal or glass), screw in or nail in according to the legs you picked, flip over--and voila! You have a new decorative piece!

If you are looking to reupholster your ottoman because the cushion isn't as soft anymore or you just want a different fabric, it can be done in a few easy steps. Padding can be purchased at a craft or fabric store. You can also find different types of padding to fit your desired amount of firmness or plushness. Once you have the fabric and padding, flip over the ottoman and remove the current fabric and padding. Lay out your padding (which should be cut to the size of the ottoman) on top of the back of your fabric. The fabric should be cut to cover the ottoman all the way around with about a half inch on the underside to allow the fabric to be stapled. Once you have stapled the fabric on all four sides, reattach the legs and flip over. You now have a brand new ottoman!
