Tips on Setting a Beautiful Christmas Table

Tips on Setting a Beautiful Christmas Table

Don't let the craziness of the holiday distract you from creating a beautifully detailed Christmas dinner table. A lovely table invites friends and family to a celebratory dinner and sets the tone for the event. Family and close friends will reminisce about childhood memories and yearly events as they sit around the table you design. Thankfully, there are some simple tips and savvy short cuts to setting a beautiful table without it becoming another holiday chore. Does this Spark an idea?

Colors

The best tip for creating a beautiful Christmas table design is to pick a color theme. Cranberry red, plum, wine and sage green are appropriate colors to use on the Christmas table. Accessorize in the same color palette and add, if appropriate, touches of silver or gold Napkins, a table cloth, place mats, a table runner and chair covers can all be coordinated to reflect the color palette.

Place Settings

If you have nice plates or dinnerware, use them. If not, or if your set is not big enough for everyone, do not worry. You can mix patterns, antique and new alike, if needed. Try to be symmetrical so the table is well balanced with the different plates and serving dishes. Add some crystal water, wine or champagne glasses for elegance.

Centerpieces

The centerpiece is the focal point of the table. A beautiful and timeless centerpiece idea is to fill a clear bowl with kumquats, crab apples, oranges, greens and/or glass ornaments. A cedar wreath tied with gold, plum or red ribbon makes a perfect foundation for candlesticks or a hurricane glass lamp. Steer away from scented candles on the dinner table so they do not interfere with the foods' aromas, and place tall candlesticks properly above eye level so people can see each other. Place candle votives or pillars on a mirrored tray to add extra dimension to the table.

Setting the Table

Know proper table setting etiquette to create an organized, attractive and tasteful table. Plates should be placed one inch from the edge of the table. The knife goes on the right side of the plate with the blade facing toward the plate. To the right of the knife, place the soup spoon. The dinner and salad fork are placed on the left side of the plate, with the salad fork on the outside. The water glass is placed just above the knife and the wine glasses just slightly to the right of the water glass.

Final Touches

Use gold or silver ribbon to tie the napkins, and thread small Christmas ornaments on each one. Individual decorations for each guest can be arranged by placing red rose petals inside a mint julep cup. Small details such as these make your table memorable.
