How to Make a Cover for a Baby Changing Table Pad

The soft pad on the babys changing table gets soiled easily, and having a few extra covers nearby makes a busy moms life less hectic. Learn how to make this simple slip-on cover for a standard size changing pad by following these how-to steps.

Instructions

    1

Use the existing changing table pad as a pattern for cutting out the material. If no table pad is available, make a paper pattern that is 34 inches long and 16 inches wide.

    2

Choose a fabric that is easy to wash and matches the room dcor or colors. Terry cloth, fleece, flannel and soft jerseys are great choices.

    3

Fold the fabric over with the right sides together. One side will be the width of the material and the other will be the length (1.5 yards) folded in half.

    4

Place the pattern or changing table pad on top of the folded fabric. Place the pattern so it is 2 inches in from the folded edge and centered from the ends.

    5

Use a wax pencil and draw an outline around the pattern/pad on the remaining 3 sides, about 2 inches wider on all sides from the pattern.

    6

Cut out the material around the pencil line, keeping the material with the right sides. Sew a 5/8 seam around the top and the side opposite the folded side so that 2 sides of the baby changing table pad cover are sewn shut. The bottom end of the cover should be open.

    7

Fold over the end of the open side and sew a hem around the opening, so the cover looks similar to a pillow case. Turn right side out.

    8

Slip the changing table pad inside the cover and adjust the fit if necessary by re-sewing the 2 sides for a snug fit. Cut off any excess material if the resized cover is too bulky.

    9

Place the Velcro strips on the inside of the cover bottom side of the cover so the pad is held inside the cover when the strips are closed.

    10

Feel the pad through the cover and find where the nylon security straps are on the sides of the changing pad. Mark this spot on the cover with the wax pencil. Next, make 2 small cuts, about 1 inches each, in the top layer of the fabric. Pull the security straps through the cover.

    11

Remove the changing table pad from inside the cover and reinforce the security strap holes by sewing around the holes like a button.
