How to Make a Planting Table

How to Make a Planting Table

As any gardener will tell you, having a planting table in the yard is very useful. Bending over to plant seeds or repotting seedlings into bigger containers can be back-breaking work, and totally unnecessary with the help of a planting table. Furthermore the table provides a "yard HQ" and can be where plant pots are stored or even tools are kept so you always know where everything is. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Salvage three windows of matching size to create a very rustic and beautiful planting table. Two of the windows will serve as legs for the table, with the third providing a backsplash with hooks for hanging tools or other useful items.

    2

Build the main countertop of the planting table first by laying a piece of scrap lumber across the two windows that will be the legs. The size of the table you end up with will depend on the size of the scrap lumber you use. You could also purchase a piece of ready-cut plywood for this, cut to the size you would like for your planting table.

    3

Use an electric drill to secure the countertop to the windows with screws. You will need someone to hold the window and the scrap lumber in place for you to do this. Once the plywood or scrap lumber has been attached to both windows, you will see before you the makings of a planting table.

    4

Create a further shelf for your planting table by attaching another piece of plywood beneath the main work top. You will need to position it nearer to the floor than to the work top ideally, so that fairly tall seedlings or plants can be stored there.

    5

Screw the shelf into place with a drill as before. If you don't have a piece of scrap lumber for this shelf you can purchase a ready cut piece of plywood from the hardware store.

    6

Brace the third window to the top of the workbench with a piece of wood on each side. It is a good idea to attach some vintage or antique hooks to the backsplash window so that you can hang items such as tools, keys or gardening gloves.
